I went to Chernobyl for the first time in June1991,five years after the distar. By that time I had seen and heard an enormous amount of media coverage of the horrifying consequences of the disaster. I worried about how I should or could take photographs of the aftermath. My anxiety intensified when I went to photograph children suffering from leukemia or thyroid disorders. The sight of these children left me numb, deprived of the will to release the shutter.WhenI stood by stone coffines that set off the Geiger counter with a loud, alarming noise,I thought I would never come back.
@When I visited Chechersk, however,my attitude changed completely. Most of my photographs exhibited here were taken there. The liveliness and vigor of people and animals living in harmony with nature mode a deep impression on me.As I traveled around Chechersk, the overwhelming image in my mind's eye of a nuclear planet was transformed into a living earth.
